Top tips for redesigning your galley kitchen

When designed poorly, galley kitchens can feel cramped and as though there isn’t enough space to either store your kitchen utensils and other appliances, or to prepare tasty food. However, with the right design, a galley kitchen can not only look amazing, but also be a highly functional space that’s a delight to cook in.

Here at Bournemouth Constructions, we love the challenge of designing and fitting kitchens, regardless of the dimensions of the space we have to work with.

Galley kitchens, naturally, come with some challenges, but none that can’t be overcome with some innovative thinking and the right design and building team behind you. Homes & Gardens recently offered some design tips for galley kitchens, and these suggestions are a great place to start if you’re wondering how to make the most of this kind of room in your home.

In fact, galley kitchens are highly efficient when they’re properly laid out, because the lack of corners means you can make the most of all the cupboard space you have, while giving you easy access to everything you’ll need when you whip up a storm in your kitchen, from the fridge for ingredients to the cupboards for pots and pans and, of course, the oven and hob.

One of the keys with a galley kitchen is to make sure there is sufficient space between all of your appliances (particularly any you intend to keep on the countertop) to leave yourself enough space to work.

There are ways to fully optimise the space in a galley kitchen, if you know where to look. One suggestion from the news provider is to tweak the depth and height of both your cabinets and work surfaces to suit the space in your home and your requirements for your kitchen.

When you work with our skilled team of kitchen fitters on your kitchen refurbishment in Bournemouth, Poole or Christchurch, you can outline your requirements, enabling them to adjust the depth and height of your cabinets and counters accordingly.

One of the best ways to maximise the storage space available in your galley kitchen is to fully use the height of the ceilings. In older properties with particularly high ceilings, this can give you plenty of storage, but even in more modern homes you’ll notice a difference if you take your cupboards that bit higher.

If you’d like to have a seating area in your kitchen, one suggestion is to build a bench along one section of the wall (you can put storage under it too!) and then have a narrow dining table. While this won’t work in every galley kitchen setup, if your room has enough width then it can be a great option.

Or you could have an L-shaped bench seating area in one corner, with space for a round table and a couple of additional chairs.

Dezeen recently highlighted some innovative products that could help streamline a smaller kitchen – such as an extractor hood that also works as a shelf.

We love getting creative with kitchen design, so our team will be more than happy to help you come up with a kitchen that suits your needs and looks fantastic. Contact us today to find out more about our expertise and to find out how we can help with your renovation project.
