Home renovation projects you definitely should not do yourself

With inflation in the UK reaching its highest level in decades as we approach the end of the year, you would certainly be forgiven for looking for places where you can save money in your life.

After all, the latest government figures indicate that household costs have increased by 11.7% in the 12 months to October 2022. However, if you are carrying out any work on your home, there are some jobs that it’s best to leave to the professionals.

An article for Yahoo! Finance highlighted some of the most common home improvement tasks that you might be tempted to try yourself, but that should definitely be left to professional tradespeople.

Top of the list is converting ovens and cookers from electric to gas – although we’d simply say that any jobs involving gas need to be carried out by a competent professional who is a registered Gas Safe engineer. This isn’t only for your personal safety – it’s a legal requirement for any work that involves a gas supply.

Another change you may be exploring is how to open up the space in your home – and to achieve this you may be tempted to take out a wall. The first thing to find out is whether it is load bearing (if it is, definitely don’t remove it!). If, however, it’s there purely for cosmetic purposes, what’s to stop you taking it out yourself?

Technically nothing, but bear in mind that it isn’t quite as simple as just “knocking it down”. What will you do with the debris from the wall you remove? Do you know whether there are any electrical cables or water or gas pipes running through it?

Here at Bournemouth Constructions, we are specialists in all kinds of home renovations in Bournemouth and Poole, and we will happily visit your home to help you plan your remodelling project.

The Yahoo! article also pointed out that another task keen DIYers might be tempted to take on is roof repair. Again, however, this is not a fix you want to leave to chance, or a problem you potentially want to make worse!

If you notice that you have a leak in your roof, or are concerned about its condition, the best thing you can do is contact us to assess the condition of your roof and talk you through the options for repairing it or, in some cases, it may be more sensible to put an entirely new roof on your home in Bournemouth.

Should your home require a new roof, now could also be the ideal time to explore a loft conversion, or simply find other ways of making your loft space more usable, such as by installing a skylight.

Whatever home renovation or refurbishment project you would like assistance with, our experienced tradespeople at Bournemouth Constructions are here to help. Get in touch with us today to find out more about the services we offer and find out how we can help you make your house into a home.
