Retrofitting set to be a new property trend in 2023

Are you thinking about revamping your property in the new year? Perhaps you’re looking for some inspiration for your project. This is a good time of year to start thinking about what refurbishment you might want to undertake as we move into 2023.

Property Reporter shared some of the top trends that property experts expect for the new year. Sara Ransom, a regional director at Stacks Property Search, pointed out that an increasing number of buyers are looking at new-build homes because they are more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, another regional director at the firm James Greenwood noted that retrofitting is expected to become more widespread as homeowners worry about the ongoing cost of rising energy bills.

This means projects that improve the energy efficiency of a property, whether that’s installing new windows, fitting insulation or installing solar panels, are likely to be popular among homeowners as well.

Given the rising energy prices we’ve been experiencing in the UK this year, it’s understandable that we’re all looking for ways to use less energy. Here at Bournemouth Constructions, we are only too happy to support any efforts to make properties more energy efficient – you can read about our top suggestions for energy improvements in our previous blog.

Mr Greenwood also predicted that as retrofitting becomes more widespread, more cost-effective solutions will be developed and that will encourage even more people to get involved.

Meanwhile, Mortgage Strategy revealed that nearly two-thirds of UK homeowners (62%) have a “good understanding” of how retrofitting their homes can deliver energy efficiency benefits, while 42% of those surveyed said that retrofitting is a “significant priority” for them.

Period property owners, however, face some challenges according to the experts who spoke to Property Reporter. More specifically, many councils have been forced to reduce the number of people in their listed building departments, which may mean it takes longer for homeowners to receive permission to carry out renovations or make alterations to their abodes.

Here in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, we have 48 conservation areas, which means homeowners in these locations are more restricted in terms of what they’re able to change about their properties without receiving planning permission.
